Dalgety Bay Horticultural Society Show

Betwixt magnificent Marrows and gorgeous Gladioli we established our second venture into the “fund raising stall” endeavours at the 39th Annual Dalgety Bay Horticultural Society Show on Saturday 6th September.

Mike Gourlay organises the event every year and very kindly asked us to be the charity stall this year. Not only did the society provide a gazebo and tables already erected and information for the event but Mike gave us a “Nail Board” game to get our fund raising efforts off the ground. Numerous children were observed throughout the afternoon risking their pocket money for a guaranteed prize of sweets or chocolate, not to mention the adults who could not resist the chance to gamble 50p!

Our second game, “Water or Wine” (shared by Alan) could have seen many a person going home with a bottle of wine for the evening. Despite decent odds of 12:1, our luckless competitors, more often than not, extracted the dreaded red dotted bottles and therefore took with them the thirst quenching bottle of water.

Our third game had few entries with many Bay residents finding difficulty in matching the berries to the leaves of our more common native trees. Eventually after a huge family effort over three generations, the Law family triumphed with a very respectable sore of 14/20 (although the Latin names were elusive Blair!) and won the mulled wine kit prize.

The sun shone on the day and in time honoured tradition of Village shows prizes, plates, cups and quaiches were awarded to the triumphant competitors at the end of a very enjoyable afternoon. Dalgety Bay Community Woodland Group have once again had the opportunity to increase its profile and promote the work of the group within the Bay thanks to the kind generosity of the Horticultural Society.

Thanks go to all those who helped but especially to Mike Gourlay. Good luck with next year.
