Tree Planting on the Wild Flower Bank

Sunday was a good opportunity to help Inverkeithing and Dalgety Bay Rotary in planting three Silver Birches on our Wild Flower Bank in front of Crow Wood. The local branch are taking part in Rotary International’s aim to plant at least one tree for every member before Earth Day on 22nd April. The trees were supplied by local garden centre Growforth Ltd and are native Silver Birch, an excellent tree which is both attractive and has excellent wildlife value, with caterpillars of many species of moth using its leaves. Sunday Work Party 4th February

After the dreich weather on Saturday it was a pleasure to be out and about in the woodlands today in warm sunshine doing some rescue work under Bracken’s watchful gaze, before the path construction gets underway. Bathing House Wood had several clumps of Snowdrop and Crocus that had been planted close to the path and these were carefully dug up and transplanted further back where they should settle in and provide spring blooms for future years. Another task accomplished was to move a Scots Pine in Hopeward Wood that had been planted too close to the existing footpath.

World Wetlands Day

A blog post from the SNH Reserve at Loch Leven reminded me that Friday 2nd February was World Wetlands Day when the importance of wetland habitats is celebrated. Loch Leven is home to thousands of birds and the importance of this loch is recognised in its inclusion as a Ramsar site meaning that has recognition as an internationally important wetland. In winter it is home to many species that spend their summers in the high arctic and in summer it is a breeding site for several species.
